Where to stand
Three spots on the patch account for most of what I see. None of them require leaving the path, and none of them are secret.
The upper track
Mature pine on one side, birch scrub on the other. Best in the first hour of light, when the sun is behind you looking west. Wind from the north pushes everything down to eye level.
The reservoir corner
A bench, an old fence post and a view over the shallow end. Wildfowl in winter, the occasional wader on passage when the water is low. Poor in the afternoon: the light is straight into your face.
The gate field
Rough grass and two hawthorns. Nothing rare has ever happened here, and yet it is where I have seen the most, simply because you can watch it without walking through it.
